Glycyrrhiza glabra, better known as liquorice, is probably one of the most well-known officinal herbs. Everyone has seen a candy stall selling liquorice candies at least once in his/her life. But liquorice is not only delicious, it also has significant phytotherapic properties.
Since it stimulates the production of saliva, in popular medicine this plant was used to treat cough. But that’s not all. According to some recent studies, liquorice is also very effective as a treatment for gastric ulcers and gastritis: it can increase the level of prostanoids in the stomach, thus ensuring a cytoprotective effect. Moreover, this plant’s phytocomplex is also a constituent of several preparations for external use to lessen irritations, ulcers and dermatitides and has soothing and moisturizing effects on sensitive and dry skin.
That’s a valuable herbal ally to ensure our horses’ well-being!
