The warm season is upon us and for many riders it is time to take the clipper in hand. The long and thick coat grown during the winter can be difficult to manage, especially for racing horses. However, we must not forget that the hair of a horse represents a natural form of defence not only against the cold, but also against possible external dangers such as Culicoides, small flies whose bites are responsible for Recurrent Summer Dermatitis (also known as RDEE). It is therefore not uncommon that, after the hair is clipped, the horse’s skin becomes more sensitive and prone to things such as saddle sores or irritation.
With the well-being of the horse’s skin in mind, Unika has formulated Scudo, a cream to be applied to wounds, injuries and saddle sores. Scudo contains ingredients that perform an emollient, antibacterial and restoring action on injured or irritated skin, helping it to heal.
Scudo also contains herbal extracts known in traditional medicine to be able to improve the well-being of skin such as calendula extract, eucalyptus essential oil and melalueca essential oil, also known as tea tree oil.
The topical use of calendula is indicated in the case of inflammation, dermatitis and skin lesions. It helps the skin to heal as it is able to increase the production of fibrin, stimulate the formation of new cells and improve the circulation of surrounding blood vessels.
The essential oils of eucalyptus and melaleuca perform a significant antibacterial and antifungal action on a broad spectrum. Tea tree oil also soothes the itching sensation caused by the bites of insects such as mosquitoes and Culicoides.
The oily formula of Scudo, obtained with the addition of sweet almond oil, makes the product adhere to the hair for longer and protects the wound against dirt.
Does your horse suffer from dermatitis or have more sensitive skin in summer? Unika has the solution, it’s called Scudo!
