“2009 was a special year for me: I was selected for the Turkish Junior team and, thanks to the results I had achieved in international shows, I qualified for the European Juniors Championship. Although it was my first year as a Junior rider, that year I won 4 international Grand Prix (one U25 grand prix and 3 CSIJ grand prix) and Milliyet and Cumhuriyet, two major Turkish newspapers, nominated me “Sportsman of the Year”
In 2011 Derin achieved some very good results in 24 international competitions, actually winning 12 of them. Nevertheless, what actually made 2011 unforgettable for him was the Individual European Juniors silver medal he won in Portugal with his horse Madick. It was the first time in Turkish equestrian history that a junior won a medal at the European Championship. After such a successful year, the Turkish Equestrian Federation awarded Derin as the most successful junior of 2011. That year Derin was also selected by the Turkish Federation as a potential Turkish team member for the 2016 Olympic Games.
